The Breakthrough Culture

Members of the Breakthrough team both past and present

Introduction

Breakthrough is in the space of building engaging workplace communities across organisations. Being in the industry of team behavioural training, it is vital for us to have a connected, united and inspired team. We as a team, are not perfect, nor do we claim to be one, especially when we are packed with training sessions. It is challenging to maintain the cultural standards that we aspire towards. There are difficulties that we go through like many teams.

However, there are certain cultural patterns engraved within our team that enable us to do what we do. The strength of our team lies within the relationships that we build with each other.

Here are a few ingredients of our culture, that are a part of Breakthrough. This is a behind-the-scenes to our culture:

Knowing Each Other:

As simple as it sounds, we go beyond and above to do this. We try not to be nosey though. We know each other’s families and the difficulties that each of us goes through. We know the good and the bad.

Our favourite football teams, cricket teams, favourite foods, our likes and dislikes on many fronts. We know the strengths and weaknesses of each other in terms of the roles that we play. We have structured and unstructured experiences that we have set that help us to do this. One example of a structured experience that helps us know each other better is that all meetings start with a personal positive note where we share good things that have happened in our lives the past week.

Being There for Each Other:

Life has its ups and downs and during those times, the team like family is there. We stand by each other when we lose a loved one. We celebrate the joy of welcoming a new member of the family with each other. Weddings can be joyous and stressful we ensure we are there during the thick and thin of things. When a teammate is unwell, we nourish them with foods from our kitchens as and when possible.

Periodic Vision and Value Alignment:

Our values and vision are the key elements of what holds us together. When we hire we look for value alignment since this plays a huge role in our cultural fitment. To ensure we know where we are heading and what we stand for, our periodic meetings help us to do this. The meeting is an open space to align ourselves and there are times we have had difficult yet vital conversations.

Each Team Member is Valuable (Egality Matters) :

Vivian Angelo, the CEO of Breakthrough shared about his first day at Breakthrough where he saw our founder Robin Paul sweeping – A powerful image on someone’s first day. That is the culture we strive to follow. We have the philosophy that no job is too small. Hence, every role matters, and every team member is equal. Through our conversations and interactions, we try as much as possible to blur the lines between facilitators and the support staff in terms of how we make them feel valued. The support staff are given equal opportunities to learn and grow.

We have Fun:

As cheesy as it sounds, joy is a crucial part of work. We have fun working and making work fun. Whether it be cleaning up the messy storerooms where we keep our  equipments. We are all in it together with joy to ensure the storeroom is kept to its best. Although, it can get physically demanding we choose to have fun in the process. Every year during November, we travel together as a team, we call it “The Founder’s Day” celebration.  We celebrate small wins and our favourite treat which is an egg puff.

Conclusion

The PwC “India Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey 2022” reveals the importance of understanding the aspirations, concerns, and expectations of employees in India. It suggests that creating a workplace culture that deeply knows and supports its team members aligns with the broader desires of the Indian workforce for meaningful engagement and support. This context reinforces Breakthrough’s approach to fostering a connected, empathetic, and engaging workplace as not just beneficial but essential.

In the heart of Breakthrough lies a unique culture that thrives on connection, mutual respect, and joy. Our dedication to knowing each other deeply, and continuously aligning our vision and values, forms the foundation of our spirited team. Our commitment to making work enjoyable, whether through team celebrations or shared tasks, infuses our daily tasks with joy. Breakthrough’s culture is our strength, driving us to excel in creating engaging workplace communities.
